Succession is a business risk, not an HR project

Critical roles without a credible next person are a continuity problem. A pipeline you can rely on is built before the vacancy, not after the resignation letter.

Talent

Succession charts that live in a drawer are not a pipeline. A name on a slide is not the same as someone who could step in without the business losing six months of momentum.

The risk is concentrated: a country head, a plant manager, a commercial lead, a CHRO-equivalent role that only one person has ever held. When that person leaves, the organization discovers it has been running on an individual, not a system.

Useful succession work is specific. Which roles would actually hurt if they went empty? Who is credibly next, and what would they still need? What will we do in the next 12 months so that answer is better than it is today?

That is talent strategy in practice — not a generic high-potential program, and not a scramble after the resignation is already on the table.
